Malde had deceitfully posed as an undercover police officer, luring vulnerable women into his vehicle before driving them to secluded locations where he would rape them. Although he was publicly named a suspect in the murders in August 1998, investigators struggled to gather concrete evidence tying him to any of the victims. By June 1999, Malde was sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual assaults, but the shadow of the murders lingered.

Harrison Hogue

Another name that surfaced in the investigation was 59-year-old Harrison Hogue, who was arrested on October 14, 1998, and charged with the 1997 murder of Valerie Wilson. Hogue was already known within the local sex worker community, with several women suspecting him in the murder. On October 18, Hogue was deemed incompetent to stand trial for Wilson's murder but was later declared fit for trial after a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.
