The Zhaodong Massacre: A Night of Terror

A Quiet City with a Dark Night

In the southwestern reaches of China's Heilongjiang province lies the unassuming city of Zhaodong. Nestled within the prefecture-level city of Suihua, Zhaodong boasts a population exceeding 100,000 residents. It sits strategically about 60 kilometers northwest of Harbin, the provincial capital. Despite its peaceful facade, Zhaodong became the backdrop for a night of unparalleled horror on November 18, 1995.

Chaos Unleashed

That fateful night, Zhaodong was rocked by a harrowing mass shooting orchestrated by two young men—26-year-old Feng Wanhai and 22-year-old Jiang Liming. Armed with a deadly arsenal consisting of a 16-gauge Jingan Xiongshi Model JALS12/16 double-barreled shotgun, a .22-caliber Norinco JW-9 bolt-action rifle, and a stolen Type 77 pistol, the duo embarked on a rampage that left 34 people dead, including themselves, and 16 others injured.

The massacre began in Sizhan Town, where residents Xiao Hongwei and Bai Huichen, along with five family members, became some of the first victims. Driven by an insatiable urge for chaos, Feng and Jiang stole four Beijing Jeeps and continued their spree. They fired indiscriminately as they sped away from Sizhan, heading towards Wuliming Town, roughly 30 kilometers northeast.

A Widespread Hunt

Their rampage extended to Xibali Village, located 12 kilometers west of Sizhan, as they sought more victims. Finding none, they continued to Dechang Village, north of Sizhan, stopping at a Tiancai Stop along the way. Despite their sinister intentions, they failed to find additional targets.

Jiang reportedly declared their desire to "do something on a large-scale and let the whole world know," prompting their search through towns and villages surrounding Sizhan for further targets.

Government and Security Response

The massacre quickly drew the attention of Chinese government and security agencies. In Heilongjiang, significant figures including Provincial Party Committee Secretary Yue Qifeng and Provincial Governor Tian Fengshan expressed grave concern. The Assistant to the Provincial Governor and Head of the Public Security Department, Xu Yandong, led efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, urging immediate action.

Deputy Head of the Public Security Department Chen Yongcai, along with Criminal Investigation Department leaders Sun Bangnan and Yan Zizhong, and Criminal Technology Department Head Che Deren, spearheaded the investigation. Security agencies nationwide rallied to aid in the capture of Feng and Jiang.

The Grim Conclusion

As the night wore on, security forces located Feng Wanhai at 9:40 PM in Dongxing Village, Sizhan Town. A farmer by trade, Feng was shot dead by the pursuing officers. Jiang Liming, a pharmacy operator from Sizhan Town, was cornered and, rather than face arrest, chose to end his life with a self-inflicted gunshot. Their deadly spree remains one of the most catastrophic rampage killings in modern history and the deadliest mass shooting in China's history.

Notable People from Zhaodong

Despite the shadow cast by the massacre, Zhaodong is also home to notable individuals such as Liang Wenbo, a professional snooker player, and Wang Guanzhong, a general in the People's Liberation Army.
